Since reunification, the ideological climate in Germany has shifted further to the right than ever before. In light of this, it is more important than ever to take a stand, act and defend democracy. With this year's edition of the Solidarity Series, we want to raise awareness of the importance of democracy. The T-shirt is an appeal, a statement and a contribution at the same time.

Together with the design collective Studio Yukiko, we have created a T-shirt that honors the values of respectful, tolerant and democratic coexistence: “We enjoy working with many customers and cooperation partners whose values go beyond economic interests and who are constantly working to advance socio-political discussions.”

“It's simply about saying it out loud and raising awareness of the values we need to practice every day in order to maintain a strong democracy.”

Doro Schneider is the chairperson of the association "Augen auf – Zivilcourage zeigen." Find out what she has to say about democracy, the association, and the current challenges here.

How would you describe your work in three words?

Charming, provocative, committed

What does your daily work look like?

We forge new ideas for new formats, research current issues and needs, and answer numerous inquiries. We organize and plan events, workshops, and also carry them out. We run two meeting places that are open four days a week, primarily for refugees as a contact point for connection and support.

What is you core work?

Addressing topics that are often uncomfortable but necessary for public awareness. Highlighting problems and grievances, connecting with people, and working out solutions. Raising awareness is also a major area of responsibility for us – too few people recognize problems or threats due to their privileges – this also applies to our internal work. There is no quiet backwater – we want to ensure that.

What are your biggest challenges?

Implementing the work financially – we all know these activities from volunteering, but they cannot fully unfold without sufficient resources. It requires reliable and continuous structures and contact persons. The threat situation is intensifying again. People who get involved, especially in rural areas, are well-known and therefore subject to attacks.

Which of the characteristics of democracy depicted on the T-Shirt is particularly important to you for a functioning democratic society and why?

I would choose equality and inclusion, as both go hand in hand and should be fundamental pillars of our coexistence. We are not all the same, and that is a good thing, but we are all equal and part of this society, with everything that comes with it. However, this is still a vision for the future and is only lived in fragments. But only when everyone is allowed to participate, when everyone feels represented and seen, and above all can participate in decision-making – only then can we truly speak of a democratic society.

Onze missie is eenvoudig. Producten maken waar mensen van houden, die zo min mogelijk schadelijk zijn voor de planeet en die mensen in staat stellen klimaatverandering tegen te gaan door hun levensstijl te veranderen.
